Water
Conservation
Freshwater is essential to life on earth. We need freshwater
in order to grow food, keep clean, produce energy, and to stay
alive. While approximately 71% of the earth's surface is covered
in water, only about 3% of this water is freshwater suitable
for human consumption. Although freshwater is produced through
the earth's water cycle, because of growing populations and
urbanization, the earth's freshwater resources are being depleted
faster than they can be replenished. This increased use of freshwater,
coupled by a growing number of droughts, likely due to global
warming, make the need for water conservation more compelling
than ever before in human history.
While desalinization may be a viable option in the future to
increase freshwater supplies, the technology is expensive and
energy consumptive. Water conservation is the most cost effective
and environmentally sound way to reduce demand for water and
stretch our freshwater supplies. Water conservation also saves
energy and reduces carbon emissions, which helps in the effort
to stop global warming. Water and energy are inexorably linked,
as energy is required to lift water from underground aquifers,
to transport water from the areas where it is found to areas
of human use, including pumping water uphill, and for treatment
of water waste. Globally, it is estimated that more than 7%
of the world's energy consumption is used for delivering water.
In California, this number is estimated to be as high as 10%.
A large amount of freshwater is also used in the process of
creating energy.
Use of the Water-Saver water saving device is an inexpensive
and easy way to conserve freshwater and energy, to help the
environment and to reduce global warming. Nearly 80% of freshwater
used at the faucet goes straight down the drain unused and is
wasted. This places an unnecessary burden on wastewater treatment
plants, and is a waste of billion of gallons of freshwater per
year. It is also a waste of all the energy used to move, heat
and treat this wasted water. Installation of the Water-Saver
eliminates all water waste at the faucet, saving up to 5,000
gallons of water per year, per unit installed.
The Water-Saver is also a preferable alternative to infrared
sink sensors. Unlike infrared devices, the Water-Saver does
not require any batteries or special tools for installation,
and costs a fraction of the price of an infrared device.
